Occupied Equestria - Hazardous Crossing
Anonymous

No.105000
105007
Set six years after season 6, Occupied Equestria presents an alternative history where the Changelings have conquered half of Equestria, while a former Equestrian colony - soured to Princess Twilight's notion of harmony with all creatures because of their encounters with griffins - Invaded and took the other half. In Baltimare and the Equestrian Southeast, the magic of friendship has weakened, as Communists, Changeling infiltrators, Fascists, gangs, and corrupt creepy politicians threaten the city. This role play is based in large part upon the Equestria at War mod for Hearts of Iron 4, and uses D&d 3.5e mechanics

Shimmering Spark, Onyx Steel, and Brie Achtungsex now make the perilous crossing into the Changeling Lands. In Baltimare, Dark Star prepares for his next big assignement, while Silver concludes his mentoring of traumatized foals. Much further away, Iron stands under jeweled nighttime skies, preparing his next move

I thought there was another bandit that must have seen the scene, since my character would have most likely left the ones he punched into unconsciousness alive and tied up.
Iron raises an eyebrow at Pear's comment.
(Is she not concerned she might be labelled a criminal too for torching a pony, no matter if it was a bandit or not?)
He shakes his head and looks at Cauldron.
"It seems we are forced to leave them here, the crazy duo that they are."
Walking over to near the pot stash, he lays down next to it.
"I hope the rest will not be stopped by another pony who has snapped and threatens to kill anypony that he sees."
He taps the floor next to him, beckoning Cauldron to come over.

Iron simply stays there, feeling the bubbling affection Cauldron has for him that makes his heart flutter. Looking into her blue eyes spark the increase of redness on his cheeks.

In the sky, Venus, the evening star, glows brighter, and red, seemingly aligned with other nearby objects. The moon itself has this tainted color. Large, dark clouds loom, and it seems these sometimes eclipse the moon making the whole land dark. A wind has come down, from the north, and the temperature has dropped considerably

The night is silent. Before there were constant sound shots of crickets, cicadas, frogs, various birds, and other creatures. Now there is nothing but silence. A silence like that of when predators are nearby

Shit, don't tell me it was done in extremely poor taste.
I thought it was a sort of funny 'main character is going to kiss the love interest but external factors impede that' kind of setup, which warranted a fake complain that encapsulates the possible frustration that viewers get.
I really meant no offense with it, and I know what is making the wind go colder, too.
Although I don't know if kisses fuel the magic love bomb or it has to be hugs.

Pear decides she hasn’t talked enough. She had been silent the whole trip, and she must think she’s entitled to speak now

“Did you really think you were going to settle down and enjoy that money? The bandits you took it from probably felt the same way, and speed Reciew certainly did. And even before them it was taken by ponies who never were able to retire on it, who probably took it from ponies who mined it through forced labor. And when you get to Saltmane, heh. Surprise! The Fascists will claim it, as will other ponies, before the changelings come in. Never ending war and strife. Greed and self interest, never love for the fellow pony.... your libido does not count. Nothing less than the Windigo crisis saved ponykind from destroying itself before, and it will take nothing less than another windowing crisis, or a Nightmare Moon, to save the world from itself this time. You don’t care for your fellow pony because you feel like you don’t need them. So you fight them for the stuff you want. Only when you really do need your fellow pony to save yourself from something bigger than you, stronger than you - I assure you there are plenty of things out there bigger and stronger than even you - only then will there be peace, harmony, and heroism. Only then will death have more meaning to it than a few measly bits”

Iron can't help but shiver at the increasingly lower temperatures that feels so alien to him.
He looks at Pear in disbelief.
"You mean to tell me you added yet another enemy to the list in the hopes that ponies rest their differences and fight the thing with friendship?"
Shaking his head, he continues. Hopefully without actually throwing that cold steam from the mouth due to the cold
"Union through necessity only lasts until the need is fulfilled. What makes you think this will have a lasting impact when the last time it happened simply lead us to this point in the future?"

She grins, and nods. At least that’s what she seems to be doing. They are a bit further away, and a cloud has obscured the moon, making it harder to read her

“That’s exactly what I’m doing. Nothing else will do it, and it’s worked charmingly before.”

She adds
“Wouldn’t that be good fortune? To create a Golden age that lasts at least a generation, and a silver age for at least another one. I’ll consider myself to have accomplished something worthy of a lifetime, if all I’ve done is to buy a Golden age for a generation.”

The shadow seems to shake her head
“Where there are no heroes to ward off what lurks beyond the terrestrial sphere, the Nightmares return. Without the Tree of Harmony, were always destined to end up at this stage. It’s just a question of whether ponykind, or changelings, finishes them off first.”

The drop in temperature is significant, but also not that significant. About 10 degrees Celsius in only a few minutes, and it may drop further. The leaves of trees start to move as the wind blows, and a set of stars converge on the Evening Star, which continues casting its orangish glow

More like she's starved of meaningful pony interaction aka she's lonely.
However, his main reason for the displays of affection is mainly to shoo away the windigos since if he shows companionship and affection, he understood that it drives away the windigos. The fact that Pear has to be a somewhat unwilling witness is a coincidence that could either warm her heart into regretting her decision and telling Iron the solution or make her even angrier in worst case scenario.

May as well continue more of the story...

The clouds eclipsing the moon pass, restoring the light. For much of the past several minutes, the evening star has looked strangely like a dead whale in an open blue and black ocean, set upon by a frenzy of circling white sharks, and bathing the water in its blood - as the celestial body, surrounded by nearby glowing white stars cast a reddish glow upon the whole night. Now, it appears that the Evening Star - which for so long bejeweled the night with its especially yellowish glow, now appears to have bled white and lost its color.

Below the stars the dim white light illuminates a land turned upside-down in a bizarre Saturnalia of weather. The wind continues in quick gusts, and the sound of rustling leaves replaces the former symphony of insect and animal noises of the jungle. All sounds of life have ceased. The dark wind blows from beyond the horizon and from above the thickening clouds, sending a chill wind that strips away the jungle heat that was so stifling just minutes before.

It starts to snow. This is not the light snow of first winter, sending large, fluffy snowflakes children try to catch in their mouths. This is not the dense snow of middle winter that covers the land in a thick blanket. Nor is it like a blizard that whites out the sky in an intense bombardment. It is a light snow. The snow flakes are tiny, the size of the tip of a pen, and the snowfall almost resembles a light drizzle. This snow did not come from any cloud, but from the air itself. The humidity of the jungle itself has frozen as it hung in the air. It now falls upon the palm trees, the bananas, the vines, and other tropical foliage.

All of this takes place around Iron and Cauldron as the grasp each other. Though Iron pays attention to none of it, some of it is felt, seen, or intuited regardless. But for all of that, the most interesting thing to take place unbeknownst to Iron over the past several minutes has taken place on the ground.

When Iron had Cauldron tie Pear, she tied her forelegs together. The reas legs were not tied down, nor her forelegs to her chest. When Iron moved Pear, she struggled to the greater extent When Iron locked his eyes on Cauldron, he abandoned his watch over the unsecured prisoner. Even as the quadruped was not able to right herself, she slinked away, inch by inch. She new that in the short grass on the rocky outcropping, not far off, lay the sharped obsidian. She dropped the piece of the Macuahuitl when she went to taught Dr. Grant. She knew approximately where it was. When she reached the still blood soaked glass shard, she rubbed the tie against it. Obsidian breaks along neat fissures, but it does not break as cleanly as polished steel. Along those sharp edges are tiny inconsistencies that give the glass blade an almost serrated quality. All the better for Pear, as it cuts rope nearly as well as it does throats. Soon enough, Pear is free. She does not hide her tail any longer

“How does this change our plans?”

From off in the distance, there is s rumble, and a great number of birds fly into the air. Parrots, macaws, larks, they fly at in hordes into the sky with ‘caws’ that ring loudly. As soon as they leave the trees, many, or perhaps most of them are caught by the wind, swept away, or cast back into the trees. Iron’s eyes rest upon the three big black rocks of the cave entrance, covered with snow, and illuminated by a strobing blue light. Snow, coming in thick and sideways, rising away from the entrance in flurries like dust stirred by a wind. Iron can see noting but blackness coming from the entrance itself.

The formerly blood red skies above are covered in clouds, which stretch high into the stratosphere as great cumulonimbi. Lightning jumps between clouds in a near constant stream, bathing the jungle in flashing blue light. Iron might feel as if he were inside of a Tesla coil - a child’s plaything - if the globe of a Tesla coil engulfed the whole world, from horizon to horizon.

The whole scene is distorted as if by static by layers of snow that land on the palm trees and rubber plants, which shake off the snow with their reverberations in the wind, only to be covered again. Thus the whole juggle appears as s strange blur of constantly moving and flashing green, blue, and white.

And the overladen Iron tries to make his way through the end of the outcropping, and into the forest, he is battered by a piercing cold wind that howls like the hounds of hell. The pots jingle like coins in a pocket, and both sounds compete with the thunder, which sounds like a drum beat, each new blast coming in long before the last has concluded. The almost suffocating humidity of the junbgle air has been replaced by a cold dryness that makes it difficult for Iron to keep his eyes open.

The two trod into the edges of the forest. Walking through the rainforest is risky under the best of circumstances. Diseases and, animals, and monsters hide under its thick, tall canopy, and the jungles swallow up many travelers and adventurers each year. While these edges are illuminated by the strobes of lightning, Iron and cauldron go in further to a realm of darkness, dark even in daytime. The drum beat of thunder shakes the lower foliage, even that which is sheltered from some of the winds by the thick canopy. Snow trickles down, stopped by the canopy, but shaken off as the trees shake in the wind. Lightning hits trees, and some fall to the ground from the winds.

Cauldron yells at Iron, clearly exasperated
“RUN FASTER, DAMN IT!”
She nimbly darts over bushes and fallen trees, while Iron has much more difficulty dealing with the undergrowth. The deep rain forests, thankfully, are clearer than the bush or smaller canopied forests. The dense canopies 30 meters up block out the sunlight, killing smaller plants that would normally constitute undergrowth, and impede any movement. Half the time, Iron traverses in sheer darkness that makes it impossible to see the trees in front of him. Half the time, all glows in blue light from lightning that manages to shine through the canopy. Sometimes, the lightning pierced through the canopy itself, hitting trees, and sending them crashing down.

Cauldron answer Iron's question with another question
“Against what?”

Iron walls over more than one great, colorful dead bird. Their hollow-boned skeletons have been smashed to pieces when the wind blew them into trees.

As Iron nears the lake, he looses sight of it through the canopy. The trees steadily become smaller, and so the undergrowth becomes thicker, making travel more difficult. Cauldron goes ahead of Iron and tries to quickly slash vines and bushes out of the way. As the trees become smaller the roar of the winds becomes greater, and the bushes shake.

Iron comes to the lake side. There is some snow build up on the lake surface, though most of what falls down is swept away immediately by the winds. It’s getting hard to see the other side. The sky remains a realm of electric blue fire, while a number of lightning strikes are sent down into the forest canopies

Iron, seeing how the animals' eyes bled out for standing still, prays to whatever god controls the water and starts walking on the ice to cross the other side faster.
(I do not want to imagine what happened to those poor creatures.)

Cauldron lopes on out ahead of Iron as they both run towards the center of the small lake. Over towards their right, and on the other side, the Wirraway sits submerged as a silent guardian.

Iron is now exposed, and he feels the full, cold wind against him. The ruined town is up there, on the hill. And again, Iron feels as if he is inside of a planet-sized Tesla coil orb, played with by supernatural forces the same way a child in science class would. Blizzard snow makes his vision appear as if in static.

Does that include having a fuzzy coat and mane?
As the fuzziness of Iron's coat both from the cold and the static, Iron's worry levels increases as his own sight acquires a static effect.
(Wirraway give us strength!) he thinks to himself as he bolts towards it.

There is no static in the air that is not related to the constant aggressive lightning strikes, and if Iron’s cost really is rising from a sudden surge of static electricity, then Iron should be fucking terrified.

Big native not smart.
Iron may see his hair as more pointy than usual for how scared he is.
Still, the Wirraway calls him in a vain hope that it will help him.

In that case, it would be a good idea.

I will ill miss this dank place when we depart. Silver makes his way back out to his cart, still full of supplies he bought earlier. "Really thought I would use all of this today. Suppose I have all of this for rainy day."

Still though, it's in the way of his work. He drops his supplies off in the farm's basement while he takes the cart back into the catacombs.

So, I suppose he can take his time to put as many books as he can into cart, since there's no more undead...I think.

I am very glad I bought this cart. The catacombs (likely) seem quiet now, with the lack of undead menace. Silver is very glad for it.

He stops at the library, and begins to remove books from their shelves and onto his cart. Surely it can not take more than couple more trips to finish this.

I suppose I will have to be careful while proceeding forward. I might be able to keep it in cart with magic, I do not know. He'll have to come back for what books he can salvage from the burnt library, but for now he heads back on the way to the Grand Baltimare Hotel.

Iron gallops with all that he can for how heavy he is, and he is very heavy. The ruins are in sight over the top of the hill, and the Wirraway is much closer. Cauldron lopes over the ice, jumping though snow, ahead of Iron. They are a little more than half way over the lake when it happens. It’s hard to hear over the drumbeat if thunder, but there is a distinct crack under Cauldron, who jumps up away, and Iron cones after her. The ice breaks under Iron’s right hoof first, causing him to break through to the water underneath, and loose balance, the left one breaks through, then his whole body slides forward towards the water. Into the water

Uh oh.
Iron's current sliding towards the water was, admittedly, very obviously going to happen due to how heavy he is.
Can he roll jump to try and get off the path of inminent water splashing time?
