Occupied Equestria - Hazardous Crossing
Anonymous

No.105000
105007
Set six years after season 6, Occupied Equestria presents an alternative history where the Changelings have conquered half of Equestria, while a former Equestrian colony - soured to Princess Twilight's notion of harmony with all creatures because of their encounters with griffins - Invaded and took the other half. In Baltimare and the Equestrian Southeast, the magic of friendship has weakened, as Communists, Changeling infiltrators, Fascists, gangs, and corrupt creepy politicians threaten the city. This role play is based in large part upon the Equestria at War mod for Hearts of Iron 4, and uses D&d 3.5e mechanics

Shimmering Spark, Onyx Steel, and Brie Achtungsex now make the perilous crossing into the Changeling Lands. In Baltimare, Dark Star prepares for his next big assignement, while Silver concludes his mentoring of traumatized foals. Much further away, Iron stands under jeweled nighttime skies, preparing his next move

She looks back up and probably over her shoulder to her right at Iron.
“A ‘finders fee’ is a tradition based upon maritime salvage operations where an owner of the lost treasure is known and easily located. The industry custom is 10% of the whole. Archeological sites don’t follow the Law of the Sea, they are under the Antiquities Act. The Antiquities Act states that historical artifacts older than 300 years belong to the cultures that produced them, which is kind of a legal vacuous term but it generally means the government, but the government’s claim can also be taken by public institutions. In this case, it would be the Tenochtitlan Autonomous Area. Peer Review had this grand idea that it would either be exchanged to the museums in Tenochtitlan and Baltimare in exchange for ‘donations’ and ‘established scholarships.’ Possibly some of it would be on display at the university for possibly a small fee, and in any event they could make money selling books about it, or petition the government for more funds. There are circumstances where parts of a cache can be sold privately, but I don’t know the law well enough. Of course, with the change of administration from Canterlot to Sunset, it’s not even clear that the Antiquities Act applies at all.”

Iron's head cocks, confused at how his question triggered an explanation of what is a finder's fee compounded with Peer's donation tactics and the possibility of the act that allows the fee being quite malleable.

AUTHOR’S NOTE:
I don’t really know what the laws for the ownership of historical artifacts is in most nations, but judging by the fact that most of the more interesting artifacts end up in government-owner museums, the government probably claims ownership. In Britain and France, for example all or most major artifacts extracted by their respective nations are displayed in their national museums... even when these were blatantly stolen from other nations. The Untied States’ Antiquities Act of 1906 states that all artifacts found on Federal and Tribal Lands - but not Private Lands - belong to the Government (probably Federal, maybe Tribal, I don’t know).

So where does this leave Equestria? Well, Equestria (in my portrayal - I do not know about the show) is what is technically an Empire that aspires to be a culturally homogenous nation-state. Thus it could either have a policy based on assimilation, where all artifacts belong to the central government, probably to be displayed in the big museums in Canterlot, or a policy based on minorities’ rights, where local governments would have the first claim. I think an interesting combination would be “Antiquities must be given to a relevant claimant,” possibly with local claimants having a ‘first pick’ or something. This would mean that either the local or central governments could get it, and they could compete by exchanging something in return, or in the case of universities, giving funding and grants to the university in exchange for giving up their own claim to be “the Equestrian public.” This would leave a world where money can be made off of historical artifacts legally, while still having realistic limits to what can be sold.

All that is really story relevant is that it is illegal to sell antiques except under certain circumstances, that it is still possible to make money off of Antiquities legally by means of legal fictions, and that the amount of money raised (directly) by selling it legally is much less than the amount it would sell for to private bidders on the black market in Skyfall.

Silver Sword's silver sword comes down upon the unknown creature from above, striking the top of its head, bouncing against its skull but breaking it, and tearing off the ear in the process. It comes down onto its neck, severing the spinal cord, tearing flesh, then into the shoulder where it renders the bones of the collars apart. No blood comes from the creature, and it falls down to the floor

>>106121
Pear is prancing around the fire in an excited set of jumps. She has taken her hat off, and let her hair down into pretty streams of orange-red. She wears only an open brown-green jacket, and a set of three feather on a necklace around her neck. She sings in an alien language

"Whakarongo mai ki ahau, nga atua nui o Marexica, nga rangatira o te raorao me nga mea katoa kei reira. Ko ahau te tamahine a taku tohunga nui, a ka hoki mai i te toru tekau o nga whakatupuranga. Hoki mai ki te tango i to whenua me to ture. Kua hinga koe i te atua o te ra, kua ngaro ia inaianei. Kei te mura te ahi i te riri me te totohe. Ka kai koe i te pai."

There is some wood, off to the far left, though it's not exactly clear when that got there or it is really enough for the fire. She isn't really big enough to gather that much wood. She must have found wood over from some unseen stockpile gathered by the expedition, and brought it over when Iron wasn't looking. At least that's the simplest explanation, anyways.

Cauldron sleeps, and the prisoners seem to. Insects still make their sounds, and it remains hot. The nearly full moon illuminates what the fire does not, and the stars are out

(What is she doing? Is she calling to the gods? Whatever it is, Cauldron seems to be right something is amiss.)
Iron decides to simply spectate for now, as she might panic if she discovers Iron has witness her secret side. Although the whole moving thing may actually make her aware that somepony's watching.

Okay, so she is speaking in old Neighuatl, which if it isn't the same language as Iron's native tribe, or if the language has drifted, is probably at least similar

She continues, prancing around in a circle around the fire, around her four idols placed at corners. Her hair bobs up and down as she prances

"Haere mai i nga atarangi kua huna e koe. Hoki mai i te torona tiretiera i herea ai koe."

She stops at the marble stone dog statue
"Ko Xolotl, te atua o te uira, ko te whakahoki mai i nga tupapaku, ka hoki mai ki a matou mai i to whare herehere i te whetu ahiahi"

She prances over, and to the Jade turkey idol
"Chalchiuhtotolin, he atua nui o te whiu me nga mate. Hoki mai ki a matou i nga wahi huna i raro i nga awa me nga awa kua tanumia"

She prances over the the obsidian jaguar idol on another corner
"Tezcatlipoca, te atua Jaguar o nga hurricanes, te pakanga, me nga hau o te po, ka hoki mai ki a tatou. Hoki mai i to wahi huna i raro i nga ngahere"

She then prances happily over to the last idol, the golden idol of a pony skeleton
"Te nuinga o ratou, te atua o te mate, Mictlantecuhtli. I peia koe ki te reinga ka hirihia ki reira. Pakaruhia to hiri me te whakaora i to rangatiratanga"

She then continues prancing around in a circle
"Ko te atua o te ra, nana nei koe i tuku, kua ngaro. Tangohia ahau hei tohunga kau. Ka awhina ahau ki a koe, ka koropiko ki a koe, ka rite ki taku tupuna i mua i ahau."

A porcelain smoke pipe with sea pony engravings on it, and a letter

The letter is entitled "Plans for action"

"To Oilseed Marsh, Wipperwill and I have been following Joseph Curwhinny for some time. We know that in your experience working as a sailor under him his policies could be a bit forceful or overbearing, and what we now know shows that the worst of it is not his monopoly over the tobacco and salt trades. After the discovery of a wrapped and mutilated cadaver along the Hayseed river last spring, long held suspicions that something was amiss were confirmed. The full extent of the horror has been revealed by an associate of Curwhinny's. As the local officials are as involved in the trade monopolies as Curwhinny himself, if not more so, our action alone can put an end to it. We believe he spends his weekends on a farm out of town. Under that farm is a network of tunnels, possibly built as a hiding place during earlier dragon incursions, and more likely built recently as an underground housing either for slaves or smuggled goods. Be advised that he is expected to have unholy thralls under him, or at least, he may. They are different depending upon whether or not the subject they were created from were alive at the time of the procedure. At least, so says Wipperwill's source. Meet by the stream tonight, and more precise instructions will be given there. Look for me, under the tallest oak tree, and for Wipperwill, a white pegasus stallion.

She stops, and goes to the fire, and scatters something on it

"Hoki mai. Kua ki te ao i te hara me te hubris me te hiahia"

What ever dust she scattered on the fire, catches flame in a burst of green and yellow light
"Hoki mai. Whakahokia tou torona"

She pulls out an obsidian piece, and walks away from the fire, further away. Further away still until she reaches a brown stallion, sitting up, tied and gagged. It's a stallion Iron knocked unconscious during the fight against the bandits the day before

Cauldron lies on her side, with her head on a blanket she brought with her. Her mouth is open, her tongue partly out, and she is slightly drooling.

"Huh?" She gets up onto her belly and places herself over her legs when Iron wakes her. She looks around, until she sees Iron
"What is it?" she asks

Pear continues going forward, speaking
"Kei toku ringa te hoari i whakamahia e taku koroua. He wairangi tenei. He tahae ia. Ka hoatu e ahau he kaha ki a koe. Na inaianei kua pakaru o koutou here."

She goes up to the stallion, brandishing the piece of sharped, black obsidian. From this distance, and with the light of the fire making it difficult to see certain darker objects in the distance, it is impossible to tell if the pony's eyes are open, but... probably they are, witnessing the whole event unfolding before him.

Pear stands before him for a moment, staring. Then, she does a twirl on her hind legs, raising her forelegs, and swinging around her hoof, blade held firmly.

A "theek" sound is herd, and the blade has definitely sliced the throat of the stallion, whose head hangs. She tries to pull him towards the fire.

There is a "hmmmm" sound from another prisoner, further away

Pear continues, dragging her bounty to the fire
"Kua oti te mahi"

Pear moves towards the fire, slwoly, then tosses the body into the fire with her reserves of Earth Pony strength. it falls in the center, and sparks fly around it as embers and pieces of wood are displaced
"Na tenei ka wawahi koe i ou here"

She walks back towards the prisoners, but a bit more to her right. Towards anther prisoner who is leaning against a log. He is clearly awake, because he is moving his head. Pear comes up to him, and stands in front of him. She stares at him intensely, with anger, and begins a very one-sided conversation.
"What was all that about the Equestrians being imperialists, forcibly assimilating cultures and oppression others by eliminating their customs?"
"Hmmmph hmmph!"
She points a hoof directly to the fire. A blood trail leads from it.
"THIS is what native culture looks like. This is what their customs were."
"Hmmph!"
"Pfft! Of course, you already knew that. Tartarus, you got robbed by a native and a Zebra just earlier tonight..."
"umph!"
She rolls her eyes, but they land back on the prisoner quickly enough
"And what was that about the Equestrians being the villains? Their harmony being a tool of imperialism? The Inquisition being the embodiment of oppression?"
"Hmmph"
"THIS is what the Inquisition warned against. Fought against... It's why the lessons of the Princesses, the Elements, the Pillars were so important. They taught Harmony..."
"umph?"
"But they could never teach it well enough. They could never really get across the importance of Harmony... Even when they could, they were just reacting to the circumstances. Answering a call filled by others..."
She looks at him, more sad now
"But the age of heroes is over. You all have abandoned your princesses. You have already unlearned the teachings of the elements. They could never quite teach you. They couldn't make you listen."
She smiles
"But that's alright. It wasn't the Princess who taught the Elements the principles of Harmony. It wasn't the Pillars who taught the United Tribes Harmony. No. Even they couldn't do it alone"
she comes closer to him, and speaks more softly
"I know I certainly cannot"
she looks to the skies
"But I know who can"
Back to him
"It wasn't the Princess who taught her disciple the importance of Friends. It was Nightmare Moon. It wasn't the ponies by themselves who learned the importance of unity and harmony. It was the Windigos who taught them that important lesson"
Now she smiles more malignly
"What's that? You don't believe in Windigos? You don't believe in the Stars that Aid in Her Escape? You think it's all superstition? All made up stories and fables? Hahaha!"
Now it's a big grin

He takes this opportunity to place himself on top of the mare in her compromised position. This is the one time one could say they really were wrestling.
I think Pear can do an action before I get to pin and later disarm her. Attacks have -4 to hit.

Pear can feel a light shudder coming from her grappler, his expression is clearly shocked judging by the widened eyes and raised eyebrows.
(Is this what civilization does to mares?)
She can feel Iron applying pressure with his body weight, holding her forelgs with his own.
"What are you doing with your partner?"

I assumed Pear's position is belly to floor but since he grappled with his forelegs, he could easily move hers to the sides as he made her tumble to the floor.

Perhaps there is a misunderstanding as to the meaning of “smile”

Pear gives Iron a malign grin, which shows that she has resigned herself to being unable to immediately escape or fight, while her resolve has not yet fled her. She shakes, showing she is involuntarily in great fear. She pulls down her tail, trying to wrap it close to her and under her.

Cauldron comes over, clearly pissed off
“The fuck were you doing?!”

Pear answers Iron’s question first. Slowly, deliberately, with hints of anger. Occasionally, fear breaks through

"About as done as I was, which means I have likely two more trips to make, perhaps three. If you are asking because you wish to know when I will be ready for mission, then I will tell you that I still have couple other things I need to do after this. I need to see Father Maren about putting Joseph Curwhinny to rest, and I have couple issues with equipment and weapons that need solved."

Silver thinks for a couple seconds. "Iron and Onyx, do they have firearms?"

“It’s how you spoke to Dr. Grant the first time you met him. You killed several ponies, in fact. Killed by leader of the bandits, too. Didn’t even give him - them - a chance to speak back. It’s how you spoke to him when you two tried to kill him later. It’s how you spoke to all those ponies in the camp. What were there, like, six of them? A couple playing poker. Why are you angry at me for speaking to the pony you almost killed yourselves?”

Iron shakes his head.
"Do you honestly believe fighting between ponies is equal to killing somepony who could not even defend itself?"
He looks at Cauldron, determined.

"You say you might need to request some heavy artillery for this mission. In my years of working as mercenary, I have seen combat become far deadlier in recent years, and fought at increasingly longer distances. As much as it pains me to say, even my beloved greatsword is not as effective in modern combat as it used to be, when swords were still viable against those early breech-loaded rifles. And thus, I have noticed that there is two among our number who lack ranged weaponry. I still have one Lavender Rifle that I need to get cleaned and fixed, and there is still that Colt pistol you left in my possession. I was thinking perhaps that they could be given to Iron and Onyx once weapons have been readied, that they may have option to fight at distance."

Cauldron scarcely needed Iron’s direction. She goes up to tie her. Pear uses the occasion to wrap her long red tail under her.

“Fighting? Is that what you call it? Because it’s hardly fighting. Ambushing opponents. Attacking before they know you are there. Attacking them with no chance to defend themselves. Attacking them before you even know they are hostile to you. And most of them you attack... the only reason you had get past them at all was money. All for a little money.”

Iron raises a hoof, poking his chest.
"Oh no. They did have the chance to defend themselves. Why else would I have all the metal bits in me if that were not the case? Do you think Grant gave all of these wounds?"
He then pokes her flank.
"You? You do not even have a scratch. From the moment the maroon pony and his two goons aimed a gun at me and my partner for the dog idol to now, yet you feel entitled to kill a pony in a vain attempt to spread your ideas to a scared pony whose only thought process is," he looks to the sky, face contorting into a pleading expression, "'Help! Help! I am going to die.'"
He turns back into the judgemental stare at Pear.
(Damn these history ponies. Why are they so crazy?)
